Over the years, PFLAG National’s A Note to My Kid project has delivered uplifting messages to LGBTQ+ people from their parents and families. Now, we’re raising this project up again in support of the #LAVGrads: LGBTQ+ college and grad students graduating in the class of 2020.
On Saturday, May 23, 2020, in partnership with our friends at Campus Pride, we will co-host a national “Lavender Graduation” for LGBTQ and ally graduates of the Class of 2020 to celebrate and honor their achievements. This free, live streaming event to celebrate #LAVGrads will begin airing at 3 p.m. ET / 12 p.m. PT at CampusPride.org/2020, across Campus Pride social media channels, and in a Watch Party on PFLAG National's Facebook page.
2020 marks the 25th anniversary of the very first Lavender Graduation organized at University of Michigan by Ronni Sanlo, a pioneer of campus organizing for LGBTQ+ people within higher education. Since 1995, Lavender Graduations have been a commencement tradition for LGBTQ and ally college students that is now included in many universities across the United States. Sanlo will be a featured speaker along with LGBTQ and ally graduates, as well as notable guests, including Rep. Sharice Davids (K-3).
Here's where PFLAG parents and families come in:
We invite you to share a message of support with your favorite LGBTQ+ student. Your message can be a letter, a photo, a video, a drawing - anything with personal meaning to you - uplifting their school success, your personal pride, your love.
PFLAG National and Campus Pride will uplift them on our social media!
Your note to your LGBTQ+ kid will send a message to LGBTQ+ kids everywhere: You love them, you’re behind them, and their success is something to be celebrated!
