Meet a king about to lose his throne, a queen about to lose her inhibitions, and two princesses about to find love. If ever there was a PFLAG fairy tale, this would be it. We’re talking about Head Over Heels, a bold new musical comedy, set to the music of the iconic 1980s all-female rock band The Go-Go's, including the hit songs, “We Got the Beat,” “Our Lips Are Sealed,” “Vacation,” Belinda Carlisle's “Heaven is a Place on Earth” and “Mad About You.” (Did we mention lead singer Belinda Carisle is a longtime PFLAG mom? You heard that right!)
Michael Mayer, the Tony award-winning director of Head Over Heels enthuses, “What makes this show so unique is the combination of a classic romantic comedy mixed with these incredible Go-Go’s songs and the way it gets everyone to dance and have a good time.”
A hilarious, exuberant celebration of love, Head Over Heels follows the escapades of a royal family on an outrageous journey to save their beloved kingdom from extinction—only to discover the key to their realm's survival lies within each of their own hearts. That royal family includes two daughters, each of whom finds love in surprising places...this is a PFLAG story for sure.
The cast features both longtime Broadway stalwarts and new up-and-coming stars, including Bonnie Milligan in a star-making turn as the older daughter, Pamela. Says Milligan, “[This show is] a modern-day fairy tale that is just serving joy at the Hudson Theatre.” What an understatement.
Also making her Broadway debut is Peppermint, the well-known drag queen and trans-activist who was the runner-up on the ninth season of RuPaul's Drag Race. “It’s a dream come true to be on Broadway, and it’s an even better dream to be in a show [with material] that you believe in.”
Peppermint stars as the nonbinary oracle Pythio, we believe a first for Broadway.
“Pythio represents change and the theme that change is inevitable,” says Peppermint. “The word ‘nonbinary’ is used out loud to describe a person’s gender identity. On stage. On Broadway. People come up to me after the show and disclose to me that they are nonbinary and that this show resonated with them so much. It’s just so special.”
Pythio isn’t the only LGBTQ representation in Head Over Heels. “Many of the characters, including the oracle, deal with sexuality and gender from a nonbinary approach,” Peppermint shares. “That really resonates personally with me. And, I believe it will resonate with everyone, but specifically for people in the queer community.”
No doubt: Head Over Heels is a gender-bending, gender-blending musical--and a don’t miss!
