LGBTQ+ Representation in Film

Looking for ways to keep the conversation going about LGBTQ+ issues with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter? Welcome to Something to Talk About, a monthly series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program to create conversation about LGBTQ+ issues. Each month we’ll offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion.

We hosted a conversation about this article as a part of PFLAG Connects and Something to Talk About Live on Thursday, April 9. Did you miss it? You can still watch it here!

Article: The 14 best movies featuring LGBTQ stories you can watch on Netflix right now

Source: Insider

Author: Jacob Sarkisian

Questions for Discussion:

  1. How many of the LGBTQ+ films on this list have you seen? Are there other films and/or series currently on Netflix that you would recommend to friends and family?
  2. Many of these films have melancholy or tragic endings. In your opinion, why is that the case? How does it make you feel? What do you think members of the LGBTQ+ and ally community can do to uplift films with queer characters that have happy endings?
  3. This list is overwhelmingly, though clearly not exclusively, white and gay. Why do you think that is that the case? How can you raise this issue with people, and what suggestions would you have to expand peoples’ views?
