Removing Homosexuality from the DSM

Looking for ways to keep the conversation going about LGBTQ+ issues with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter? Welcome to Something to Talk About, a monthly series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program to create conversation about LGBTQ+ issues. Each month we’ll offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion.

We hosted a conversation about this article as a part of PFLAG Connects and Something to Talk About Live on Thursday, December 10. Did you miss it? You can still watch it here!

Article: How Stonewall cured gay people – of psychiatrists

Questions for Discussion:

  1. In your personal experience and professional expertise, what are some of the effects of the removal of homosexuality from The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) in 1973? How did things change in the immediate aftermath, and what have the long-term effects been?
  2. Many LGBTQ+ people and their allies are not aware of the history outlined in this article, and presented in the film. Why do you think that is the case? What are the challenges of telling some of these stories? Is there anything everyday advocates can do to elevate these histories?
  3. What do you think about the work being done throughout the country, at the local, state, and federal level, to ban conversion therapy for minors? Does it go far enough – should it go further?
