Looking for ways to keep the conversation going about LGBTQ+ issues with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter? Welcome to Something to Talk About, a series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program to create conversation about LGBTQ+ issues. Each week we’ll offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion.

We hosted a conversation about this article as a part of PFLAG Connects and Something to Talk About Live on Thursday, June 24. Did you miss it? You can still watch it here!

Article: DC Pride Spotlights a New Flash and LGBTQ+ Heroes and Creators

Questions for Discussion:

  1. The DC Pride issue -- like many other items that appear in June -- aims to center LGBTQ+ characters. What does this mean to you? Do you think that efforts like this one have the power to shift ideas among readers who are new to LGBTQ+ content (or even those who might be resistant)?

  2. All of the primary characters in the issue are queer-identified. When incorporating LGBTQ+ identities into the work, how should it happen? For example, is a passing mention of identity enough? Or should it require a deeper dive into what that means? In other words, what are the things creators can do to ensure that their efforts at inclusion are truly authentic and respectful of diversity inside of LGBTQ+ spaces?

  3. Issues like this one serve as a signal of hope for many LGBTQ+ readers, especially those who identify in more expansive ways (e.g., bi+, nonbinary, etc.). However, this is a special Pride month issue. Is it reasonable to expect more stories like these to appear year-round? How can readers/consumers voice their support for work like this, both formally and informally? How can people use issues like this one to initiate this conversation?
