Looking for ways to keep the conversation going about LGBTQ+ issues with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter? Welcome to Something to Talk About, a monthly series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program to create conversation about LGBTQ+ issues. Each month we’ll offer an article on LGBTQ+ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion.

We hosted a conversation about this article as a part of PFLAG Connects and Something to Talk About Live on Thursday, September 17. Did you miss it? You can still watch it here!

Article: 13 queer classics you need to have on your bookshelf

Source: Vogue (France)

Author: Rosalind Jana

Questions for Discussion:

  1. Look at the list. Which books do you think belong there? Are there any that you’d remove – and why? What’s missing?
  2. The concept of the Queer literary canon has been extensively discussed among scholars, and searches on the term tend to generate lists of key books that ought to be included. Still, it is less defined than some other genres. Do you think that there is a clear Queer canon – and is “Queer canon” inclusive enough to elevate works by marginalized authors in the LGBTQ+ space?
  3. Name one book by an LGBTQ+ author that changed the game for you and make your best recommendation for reading it.
