Looking for ways to keep the conversation going about LGBTQ issues with your ERG, community group, or PFLAG chapter? Welcome to Something to Talk About, a monthly series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for EqualityTM program to create conversation about LGBTQ issues. Each month we’ll offer an article on LGBTQ topics and suggest a few questions you can use to lead a discussion.

Why Bert and Ernie’s sexuality matters to LGBTQ people

Source: The Washington Post

Author:  Nora Reed

Questions for Discussion:

  1. In your opinion, does it matter if Bert & Ernie are a gay couple or are simply best friends? Why or why not?
  2. If you feel comfortable sharing, were there fictional characters that you thought of as LGBTQ growing up? If so, what impact did that have on you? If not, why do you think that’s the case?
  3. The author makes note of three animated series that are inclusive of LGBTQ characters and romantic couples. Can you think of any other children’s television shows that depict LGBTQ characters, couples, and families?
