As summer begins in earnest and temperatures rise, is anyone else feeling just a little burnt out? The Straight for Equality team is feeling it for sure, and so this month, we’re calling on you to step back, take a deep breath, and make the choice to take care of yourselves.

The past few months have been incredibly busy and disheartening at times — whether it is news about a special discrimination session in Texas, tweets about banning servicemembers who are trans from dedicating their lives to protecting our country, or the DOJ submitting an amicus arguing against Title XII protections at work – it’s been tough. It seems as if every day there is a new heartbreak, a new call-to-action, a new reason to contact our elected representatives. And many of us are still recovering from a June filled with demonstrations and Pride month activities, don’t have any time off on the horizon, and are already preparing for the chaos that is back-to-school time.

So this month we’re not encouraging you to advocate for someone else. We’re encouraging you to advocate for you. We’re asking you to find ways to practice self-care so that you feel strong, supported, and ready to continue fighting the good fight.

Whether that means ditching social media for the weekend, curling up with a book, finally getting to that crafting project, or getting outside to take a long walk – make the time to do it. You deserve it.

Of course, we’re here to help. There are some fantastic resources online to help you find your self-care groove. So check these out, incorporate a few into your routine, and teach others how to do the same.
