Welcome to Talking Inclusively, a monthly series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program to create conversation about intersectionality, LGBTQ issues, inclusion and more! Each month we’ll offer an article on diverse topics and suggest a few questions that you can use to lead a discussion focused on how we can make space that is more welcoming to everyone.
Have feedback about how your conversation went? Run across an article you’d like us to consider? Let us know by e-mailing [email protected].

Questions for Discussion:
- Before reading this article, had you come across the newly found audio of Rustin discussing the necessity of coming out featured on Making Gay History: The Podcast? If so, where? If not, why do you think that is the case?
- The author of this article asserts that “America has a tendency to selectively remember its historical past.” Do you agree with that statement? Can you think of examples, other than Bayard Rustin, in conversations about LGBTQ+ history, black history, or American history generally?
- If someone in your organization was interested in learning more about Bayard Rustin, or other often forgotten black & LGBTQ historical figures, how would you encourage them to get started? What resources would you recommend?
