Welcome to Talking Inclusively, a monthly series designed by PFLAG National’s Straight for Equality program to create conversation about intersectionality, LGBTQ issues, inclusion and more! Each month we’ll offer an article on diverse topics and suggest a few questions that you can use to lead a discussion focused on how we can make space that is more welcoming to everyone.

Questions for Discussion:

  1. Does the argument made in this article – that LGBT elders of color face discrimination, poverty, and health disparities at higher levels than LGBT elders who are white – surprise you? Why or why not?
  2. Have you heard of projects like Mary’s House before? Does your city or state understand the need to, or already have plans to, create affordable housing for LGBT elders?
  3. Is there anything that your group or organization could do to create better community support for LGBT elders? If so, how can you be sure your efforts are supporting those with the greatest need, including LGBT elders of color?
