PFLAG’s #TransKids #SoFierce is a way for families and allies to build up trans kids by sharing positive support—while letting lawmakers know they can’t get away with anti-trans bills.

We’re kicking this off on March 31st, Trans Day of Visibility. To participate, share why YOU think #TransKids #SoFierce on Instagram, Snapchat, Amino, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, or TikTok. You can share a fun story, choreograph a dance, share a photo montage or your favorite #fierce playlists. Encourage others to join you, too!

Remember to tag @PFLAG or use the hashtag #PFLAG so we can share your inspirational support!

Why?

In 2020, more than 200 bills in 19 states have been proposed to dehumanize LGBTQ+ people. Many of these bills specifically target kids who are transgender.

PFLAG is taking action to not only oppose these bills, but also to lift up trans kids. After all, they must be pretty fierce if lawmakers—adults in power—are targeting them.

By showing that we support trans kids, we also establish important protective factors for these youth. Studies show that when an LGBTQ+ youth has even one trusted adult they can turn to for support their risk of attempting suicide drops by more than 40%. And when parents accept their LGBTQ+ child for who they are, their risk of self-harming behaviors decreases by more than half.

In other words, showing support for transgender kids can help save lives.

Your video length depends on the platform/social network you use as much as what you want to say. Here are some ideas to get you started.

V. 1 Script with only a participation ask (timing: ~30 seconds):

Trans kids are so fierce they can do anything!

Families and allies, you know that trans kids are so fierce. Share your stories and help lift them up, too. And visit PFLAG.org to find a chapter near you. Let’s get active and protect trans kids!

V. 2 Script with personal story and participation ask (timing: ~2-3 minutes):

Trans kids are so fierce and I am inspired by them!

[Tell a personal story. It can be about you as a trans person or as an ally talking about a specific trans kid or trans kids in general. Your story should be something that inspires you and is positive. It can be big, like an action you’ve witnessed, or something incredibly normal, like joining the school band. The point is to highlight that trans kids are fierce just for being who they are. They are smart, talented, courageous, the next generation of leaders, etc.]

Join me in telling lawmakers that it’s time to support fierce trans kids. I’m with PFLAG, and I vote!

V. 3 Script with personal story (timing: ~5-8 minutes):

Trans kids are so fierce they can do anything! But this year, instead of trying to build up these courageous young leaders, lawmakers have tried to take them down.

Let me tell you why I am all about supporting and protecting trans kids.

FAQ

Are there any restrictions or things to consider before participating?

Participation is voluntary. Post through your own channels on one or more social media networks. There are no restrictions, but we do ask that you:

  • Be a great ally by thinking about safety first. Please don’t name or tag a transgender person or family member’s name, location, school, or employer if you are concerned about their safety.

  • Make sure to get permission if posting an image or video of any child, including your own.

  • Call out legislators or bill sponsors if you live in one of the states that is attacking LGBTQ+ folks with bad legislation.

    • Freedom for All Americans, Equality Federation, and ACLU all maintain current lists tracking the status of active state legislation.

    • Even though many states have suspended their legislative sessions, many of these bad bills could still be considered when session resumes.

Trans adults are hurting, too. Can I do a video about #transfolks / #transfolx #sofierce?

The rights of trans people of all ages are being attacked by bills that ban changes to legal documents, allow service providers to reject transgender customers by claiming religious exemption, and more. While our main focus is #TransKids, it’s OK to highlight the awesome fierceness of #transfolks (#transfolx).

What if I don’t want to post a picture or video? Are there links I should use?

Sure. We want to encourage folks to take action to #ProtectTransKids. Some suggested links include:

If you don’t have video or photography capability, you can share the videos and images provided by PFLAG’s partners, Transilient with the #sofierce message, or other positive stories, videos and articles. On March 31st, a new video by musician and PFLAG supporter Benjamin Scheuer will also be available to share.

Who Should Participate?

  • Trans Participants: You are role models to trans kids. Highlight that you’re so fierce because you’re trans. Build up fierce trans kids and share how they inspire you.

  • Allies: You are cheerleaders for trans kids and role models for other allies. Highlight why you are inspired by a specific trans kid or by trans kids in general.

  • Youth: You’re trans, you’re friends, you’re family, and your allies. Share that you are awesome, just the way you are - and you’re fierce because you activate allies to vote.

  • All Participants: Invite the audience to share their support for trans kids by making a video or posting a picture about why they think trans kids are so fierce. A spoken or written message can be, “support trans kids in your community by joining PFLAG.”

I represent an organization. How can we participate in #TransKids #SoFierce?

Can I post my #TransKids #SoFierce message now?

Yes. If it’s before March 31st, please re-share on that day. As long as lawmakers keep attacking trans kids with bad bills, allies can keep sharing positive messages of support.

Does this campaign have an end date?
