PFLAG National On DACA
September 5, 2017
WASHINGTON, D.C.—PFLAG National—the nation’s largest organization uniting families and allies with people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ)—today issued the following statement on the president’s plan to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, from Director of Advocacy, Policy, and Partnerships Diego M. Sanchez, APR:
“As our nation comes together to support Houston and other communities turned to wreckage by a hurricane, we have seen hundreds of families, including Latinx families, reaching out to save each other. In one especially moving moment, so representative of PFLAG’s values, we saw people of different races and ages come together to form a human chain to rescue an elderly man from a truck. That act represents my America, the country I value so dearly. And as an immigrant, my well being is similarly wrapped in family love and community safety. That is why I, like hundreds of thousands of PFLAG members and supporters, find it unconscionable that our president would choose this moment–let alone any moment–to willfully inflict harm on nearly 800,000 young people, in a nation that is their home. We remain in solidarity with Dreamers and their families and will intensify our efforts to Members of Congress from every zip code where PFLAGers and Dreamers live.”
