PFLAG National Statement on Gavin Grimm Case

“No student should have to choose between getting an education and their personal safety…PFLAG will not leave any member of our family behind.”

WASHINGTON, DC—PFLAG National Executive Director Jody M. Huckaby today reacted to the US Supreme Court decision to hear the case brought by Gavin Grimm:

“The US Supreme Court has announced it will hear the case brought by Gavin Grimm, a transgender boy in Virginia who simply wanted to use the school restroom that matched his gender identity. While we’re disappointed that the case will be heard–and that Gavin will have to continue attending school in an environment that is both unsafe and unwelcoming–we are hopeful that the Supreme Court will rule in Gavin’s favor just as the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit did.

No student should have to choose between getting an education and their personal safety; forcing students like Gavin to use a restroom that does not align with their gender identity will put them significantly in harm’s way. PFLAG National supports Gavin and his family, just as we have long supported all people who are transgender and gender-expansive and their families, in their quest to live their lives with the same rights, responsibilities, dignity, and fairness as all other people. PFLAG members–LGBTQ people, families, and allies united–will continue to fight unfounded fears with facts, supporting and educating in support of all of the Gavins in our country. PFLAG will not leave any member of our family behind.”
