PFLAG Votes 2024 Launches with “Love Votes” Campaign

August 15, 2024

WASHINGTON—Beginning today, LGBTQ+ people, families and allies can get ready for the 2024 election with PFLAG. Leveraging a proactive positive message of hope and optimism through the theme “Love Votes,” the 2024 PFLAG Votes campaign will engage LGBTQ+ affirming people throughout the U.S. to register, get educated about the issues, and mobilize.

“PFLAG families will be leading with love right to the polls this fall, because regardless of where you live, the color of your skin, or who you love, the stakes of this election have never been higher,” said Brian K. Bond, (he/him), Chief Executive Officer of PFLAG National.

Laws in 25 states ban parents from accessing gender-affirming medical care for their transgender kids.  Additionally, dozens of state laws across the country permit discriminatory LGBTQ+ education policies; from banning inclusive books and curricula to banning school sports and even access to the restroom. In 11 states, photo ID  is required to vote, creating barriers at the polling place for any voter who no longer looks like their picture—or who lacks one. And the list goes on.

“Every eligible person who can vote, should vote this election, because it’s guaranteed that someone you love is affected by what’s on the ballot. How your love votes could make the difference,” said Katie Blair, (she/her), Vice President, Advocacy for PFLAG National.

From Aug. 15th through Election Day on Nov. 5th, LGBTQ+ people and those who love them can take the pledge to be a PFLAG voter. By pledging to become a PFLAG Voter, participants are encouraged to take action by registering to vote, learning about the issues affecting LGBTQ+ people on their ballot, and organizing friends and family members to ensure they and others vote, too.

The campaign kicks off with prominent PFLAG voters, including Ilana Glazer, comedian, actor, writer, director, producer, who says in a video posting today, “I love being queer and I love queer people. This election, my love votes for the basic human rights of everyone in this country…because when we protect the most vulnerable in this country, everyone wins!”

Actor, comedian and producer Lisa Ann Walter shares that, “This year, my love votes for LGBTQ+ rights.”

And Big Freedia, Grammy Award-winning hip hop artist  who was honored in 2023 with the PFLAG National Breaking Barriers Award, reminds us that, “Everyone has the right to just be free. That’s why I’m pledging to be a PFLAG voter.”

The PFLAG Votes 2024 campaign is led by Blair, who had previously served as Director of Advocacy and Public Policy at the ACLU of Indiana before arriving at PFLAG National in February. In her role, Blair leads the organization’s grassroots strategy across more than 350 chapters and 325,000 members and supporters. This complements the  work of Diego M. Sanchez, APR (he/el), who serves as Vice President, Policy & Government Affairs. Sanchez joined the PFLAG National staff in 2013 and now focuses on federal policy impacting LGBTQ+ people and families.
