Pieces of Me
On Saturday, March 30, in honor of Transgender Day of Visibility (which takes place every year on March 31), PFLAG National debuted its newest short documentary Pieces of Me. The film—written, directed, and produced by Nick Oceano-Armendariz—centers on the life of New York-based artist and transgender activist Joslyn DeFreece and creates a filmic collage about the growth and healing that comes from art, love, family, community, and courage.
Pieces of Me tells the story of Joslyn DeFreece, a successful writer, actress, daughter, friend and transgender activist. The film explores Joslyn’s journey as a kid growing up in a conservative midwestern family, and how she developed the pieces necessary to find self-acceptance, purpose, and sisterhood.
PFLAG National is deeply committed to uplifting and centering diverse voices and experiences in storytelling and communications, including the production of numerous short films and projects. Many of these were created in partnership with writer/director/producer Nick Oceano-Armendariz (he/him), a queer Latino filmmaker. Oceano-Armendariz served as a producer on each of these films, empowering young diverse filmmakers on each project. Projects to date include:
- Las Familias de PFLAG en Español: written, directed, and produced by Nick Oceano
- A Place to Call Home: Directed by Stephanie Tran, written and produced by Nick Oceano
- Taking the Long Road Home: Directed by Qiydaar Foster, written and produced by Nick Oceano and Niketta Scott
