Pride Month Guest Lecture:
Breathing Fire: Remembering Asian Pacific American Activism in Queer History
Amy Sueyoshi (She / They)
Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs
San Francisco State UniversityWhile Asian Pacific American history and queer history have grown tremendously as disciplinary fields, queer Asian Pacific Islanders remain strangely absent despite their more than 150-year presence in America. “Breathing Fire” synthesizes existing works in queer API studies across disciplines to craft a narrative that underscores the central role of API queers in the making of a modern gay American identity in the 19th century and in the activation of radical social movements in the 20th century.
Join us for this special Pride Month Guest Lecture at our next meeting on June 8th!

-
What should I expect in a PFLAG Connects: Communities meeting?
PFLAG Connects: Communities meetings begin with a welcome and introduction to the PFLAG Connects: Communities Program. Then, the host and facilitators will introduce themselves, and review the meeting ground rules with the participants.
The facilitators then introduce suggested meeting topics and/or allow participants to introduce themselves.
Finally, the space is open for anyone who has something to share or a question for the group—attendees are always welcome to just listen!
-
What are the ground rules and norms for each support group meeting?
The ground rules and norms for every support group meeting are:
- Be honest about your feelings and thoughts
- Use “I” statements
- Listen to actually listen, not to respond
- Turn off electronics to avoid distractions/disruptions
- Respect everyone’s time and ideas and share the space
- Respect confidentiality
- Do not record audio or video of the session at any time
Hosts may invite participants to share any additional ground rules or norms for consideration during the meeting.
-
I’m new to all of this and am not sure that I am comfortable sharing my story just yet. Will I be required to share in discussions?
We pride ourselves in meeting individuals where they are in their journey of accepting and supporting their LGBTQ+ loved ones and friends. Participants are not required to participate in discussions but are encouraged to consider sharing once they feel comfortable.
