Roots in a Riot and a March: PFLAG National Remembers Stonewall and the 1972 Christopher Street Liberation Day March

June 28, 2021

WASHINGTON (June 28, 2021)—On the anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising and the 1972 Christopher Street Liberation Day March–at which the mother of the Ally movement and founder of PFLAG Jeanne Manford marched in support of her gay son, activist Morty Manford–Brian K. Bond, Executive Director of PFLAG National issued the following statement:

“It took courage in 1969 to be openly LGBTQ+, let alone to defy law enforcement demanding your rights. It took courage in 1972 to tell your LGBTQ+ child that you love them for who they are, let alone march publicly alongside the LGBTQ+ community in protest carrying a sign that called on other parents to unite in the cause. But courageous people emerged: Trans women of color led the way, activists like Morty Manford raised their voices, and parents like Jeanne and Jules Manford walked the walk–literally–and fought the fight with them.

“Today, PFLAG honors the leaders of the LGBTQ+ movement who came before us, and the hundreds of thousands of proud LGBTQ+ people–especially trans women of color, parent, family, and ally activists who continue the fight for equality and justice.”
