PFLAG National CEO Responds to SCOTUS Decision in Chiles v. Salazar
March 31, 2026
WASHINGTON—Today, the U.S. Supreme Court released a decision in the first case on the topic of conversion therapy. The 2019 Colorado law at issue was enacted to protect youth from being subjected to harmful and abusive practices by licensed professionals.
The parents and LGBTQ+ people of PFLAG have advocated for safe, affirming, and medically sound care for LGBTQ+ people since the organization’s founding in 1973, the same year the American Psychiatric Association declared homosexuality is not a mental illness. The following is a statement from Brian K. Bond (he/him), CEO OF PFLAG National:
“Families should be able to rely on valid, best practice mental health support, and LGBTQ+ youth should not be subjected to a dangerous and discredited practice that promotes shame, confusion, and spiritual disconnection. Creating loving, supportive, and safe communities is a key part of the LGBTQ+ journey, and PFLAG advocates and supporters will continue to defend every LGBTQ+ person’s freedom to thrive.”
Despite all of the attacks on the LGBTQ+ community, PFLAG National continues to grow. With 41 chapters joining since the current administration took office, PFLAG brings opportunities for support, education, and advocacy to more than 350 cities and communities in person, as well as through PFLAG Connects Communities virtual programming to reach people with shared experiences as dads, grandparents, gender spectrum parents, military families, Latina, Black, and Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander families.
PFLAG National has also launched a new advocacy campaign called Fighting for Our Pride to proactively address actions in the state and local level, where many of the most harmful policies are being introduced and passed. This campaign equips, trains, and mobilizes families to push back against these attacks and fight for the dignity, safety, and rights our loved ones deserve.
