PFLAG National To Present Straight for Equality Workplace Honors to Alcoa

March 9, 2017

NEW YORK CITY, MARCH 9, 2017—PFLAG National—the nation’s largest organization uniting families, allies, and people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ)—today announced it will honor Alcoa Corporation with the Straight for Equality in the Workplace award at the Ninth Annual Straight for Equality Awards Gala on Monday, March 27, 2017 at the Marriott Marquis New York in Times Square.

“Alcoa has demonstrated the power of working to create a more inclusive organization at every level and every function,” said PFLAG National Director of Learning & Inclusion Jean-Marie Navetta. “Their work to have fully inclusive policies is impressive, but the real power is in the fact that they’ve brought LGBT learning opportunities to their whole organization, from employees in corporate offices to employees working on manufacturing floors. It sends a key message: Inclusion is for everyone here.”

Straight for EqualityTM—a national outreach and education project created by PFLAG National— invites, educates, and engages the next generation of allies joining together with LGBTQ people in the effort to achieve equality for all. Straight for Equality awards are presented to individuals who are transforming the way that LGBTQ people are understood and treated, using their talents and platforms in their respective fields to empower others to become engaged and outspoken allies for fairness, diversity, and inclusion.

Alcoa Corporation, a global industry leader in bauxite, alumina and aluminum products, was formed last November following the separation of Alcoa Inc. into two independent companies: Alcoa Corporation and Arconic. As part of its former parent company, Alcoa has long been committed to equality, inclusiveness and a worker’s right to be their authentic self at work.

The Company’s employee resource groups include Employees at Alcoa for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Equality (EAGLE) created a decade ago to promote a safe and affirming work environment. This global group helped to achieve many of the major milestones that are part of Alcoa Corporation today. Among them, revising the Company’s Equal Employment Opportunity policy to include gender identity and expression; achieving spousal parity for domestic partners; adding healthcare coverage for transgender employees; publicly supporting LGBT legislation and coalitions; and partnering with Human Resources on recruiting. EAGLE saw a turning point when they fully engaged their allies in the Company under the guidance of PFLAG National. In addition, Alcoa continues to be a top performer on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Corporate Equality Scale, receiving a 100% score for 8 consecutive years. The Company was also recently recognized, for the 15th year in a row, as an Employer of Choice for Gender Equality by the Australian Government.

“At Alcoa, embracing diversity and ensuring that our employees are their authentic self is embedded in our Care for People value,” said Alcoa Chief Executive Officer Roy Harvey. “We rely on talented people to run our operations, and our Care principle is a constant reminder that we have a responsibility to provide an inclusive, safe and supportive environment for every employee. We applaud PFLAG National’s work and we thank them for this honor.”

The Ninth Annual Straight for Equality Awards Gala will be held on Monday, March 27, 2017 in New York City at the New York Marriott Marquis Hotel. For information on how to sponsor the #S4EGala2017 or to purchase tickets or a table, please visit pflag.org/2017Gala or call (202) 467-8180 x218.
