Thousands of anti-trans bills have been introduced in state legislatures across the country in the last several years, including bans on medically necessary care for transgender people, which criminalize providing such care to trans and nonbinary youth, sometimes imposing penalties on parents and threatening health care providers with jail time. As of August 2025, 26 states and Puerto Rico have enacted healthcare bans.
Families need to be free to access care that is in their child’s best interest. Doctors and therapists need to know they can make medically necessary and sound decisions without putting patients’ health or their own practice at risk. Patients and families also deserve privacy in making these deeply personal decisions, without government intrusion. These bills do nothing to protect the health, privacy, or well-being of youth—or anyone who needs access to medical care.
You can view Movement Advancement Project’s page showing states that have enacted healthcare bans, including information about when those bans go into effect and which bans have been blocked in court.
